Sustainable European Multilingual Vocabularies: A Model for Cooperation in Metadata Management among European Data Archives
Since the foundation of the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA ERIC) in 2013 the UK Data Service has worked with CESSDA partners to complete the development of the European Language Social Science Thesaurus (ELSST) as a stand-alone tool. In 2017 the Vocabularies for CESSDA (VOICE) project saw the agreement of a multilingual content policy, the development of the CV Manager and the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA) Metadata Standards Portfolio. In 2019 VOICE will become part of the CESSDA Metadata Office and the UK Data Service will work with representatives from Finland, Norway Germany and Switzerland to continue this work of providing metadata to make research data available from national as well as cross-national resources in Europe. This presentation will trace the history of these cooperative ventures and review the lessons learned and the achievements of the task to build multilingual cross-disciplinary tools in an ever-changing research environment.
